SGV FORWARD | THE PROJECT
Project Home / The Project / Community Input / Resources

Note: Segment 5 is being advanced by SGVCOG through a separate federal funding source
PROJECT HISTORY
Officially the San Gabriel Valley Bus Corridor Improvement Project, SGV Forward is a continuation of the San Gabriel Valley Transit Feasibility Study, a multi-year study of the region’s transportatio55:38n needs that was completed in early 2024. The feasibility study was initiated after the LA Metro Board’s decision in 2020 to withdraw the State Route 60 alternative for the Eastside Transit Corridor Phase 2 project to extend the Metro E (Gold) Line. The study identified short-term project opportunities and a long-term Vision Plan to create an integrated transit network for the entire San Gabriel Valley.
SGV Forward is focused on implementing transit improvement projects, potentially including dedicated bus lanes, traffic signal priority (TSP), and enhanced transit stops. The goal of this effort is to implement these improvements prior to the 2028 Olympic Games, with the intent of assessing and refining these improvements in the future to a full service bus rapid transit (BRT).

PROJECT CORRIDORS
The Transit Feasibility Study concluded with a Vision Plan identifying six high-priority corridors for near-term transit upgrades. One of these segments, Segment 5, is being advanced by SGVCOG through separate federal and county funding. These corridors were selected based on their potential to improve local and regional access, support transit-dependent communities, and enhance east-west mobility across the San Gabriel Valley.
The SGV Forward project is now focused on implementing “Jump Start Projects” along these corridors, which may include a combination of:
-
New dedicated bus lanes and mixed flow bus routes
-
Transit signal upgrades
-
Bus stop enhancements including new shelters, real-time bus arrival information and accessibility features
The specific types of enhancements will be driven by the results of parking and traffic studies and community outreach, in consultation with local jurisdictions. These upgrades are designed to make local transit faster, more reliable, and easier to access. Future improvements beyond the Jump Start Projects are also planned under a Mid-Term (2035) Plan and Long-Term Vision Plan that includes additional service enhancements and expanded coverage across the region.
Quick Build / Demonstration Corridor Examples:
Jump Start improvements are currently being planned along segments of:
-
Atlantic Boulevard (Monterey Park)
-
Garvey Avenue (Monterey Park, Rosemead, South El Monte, El Monte)
-
Valley Boulevard (City of Industry, County of Los Angeles)*
-
Holt Avenue (Pomona)
*Bus lane improvements along Valley Boulevard are being pursued by SGVCOG through separate funding sources.
PROJECT SCHEDULE
The Transit Feasibility Study wrapped up in 2024. SGV Forward is now moving into planning and pre-design. The demonstration projects are planned for implementation by 2028. Community outreach is expected to begin in fall 2025 and information regarding events will be posted on this project webpage.
