In an effort to manage risks and hazards associated with natural and man-made disasters, the SGVCOG has committed to preparing for such events.  To achieve this end, the SGVCOG has established an Emergency Preparedness and Services Ad Hoc Committee that will strive to ensure that the proper steps are taken throughout the Valley to protect its residents.  For the upcoming year, three of the primary focuses will be:

·       Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) Points of Dispensing (POD) Study:  Since 2002, LA County Department of Public Health (LA DPH) has been building a network of buildings or sites that could serve as Points of Dispensing (PODs) for medicine, vaccines and other critical health supplies in the event of a major emergency.  Typically, POD sites are large, publicly prominent buildings that can be easily secured, with ample parking and transportation access.  The Governing Board has directed this Emergency Preparedness Committee and the City Managers’ TAC to work with DPH on a number of issues related to this effort.

·       Southern California Earthquake Center’s (SCEC) Great California Shakeout:  In order to increase awareness of the potential dangers associated with earthquakes, while at the same time increasing residents preparedness, SCEC is in the process of planning a major, multi-day earthquake drill and conference for November 12th through the 16th.  This multi-event is targeted not only at residents, but businesses and local government.  Through the Emergency Preparedness Committee, the SGVCOG hopes that its member agencies will become active participants in this important event

·       Evaluating the Effectiveness of Air Transport Services for East San Gabriel Valley Trauma Patients:  In 2006, this Committee previously worked to ensure the expansion of the Air Transport Medivac System to secure dedicated 24 hour air transport in the East San Gabriel Valley for trauma care with funding from the Proposition B Trauma Care and Emergency Medical Tax passed by voters in Los Angeles County in 2004.  As this program has been in operation for nearly two years, this committee will be working with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services to evaluate its effectiveness and determine next steps.

In addition to these specific projects, the committee will work to address a number of critical funding and coordination issues in order to enhance our response to any emergency.
